POSITION SUMMARY

Performs specialized, professional planning work developing the vision for city growth, land use, design, infrastructure development, preservation, equity, and promotes the best use of the city's land and resources for residential, commercial, institutional, and recreational purposes, and serves as a program leader in a functional planning area.

Qualifying Requirements :

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show four (4) years of full-time work experience in City Planning, Urban Planning, or Neighborhood Planning . (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a Bachelor's degree from a fully accredited institution in Planning, Urban Design, Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or a related field. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is eight (8) years. ( See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. POSITION DUTIES

  • Manages all aspects of the Design Review Process to review the impact of development projects on the public realm. Works with architects, engineers, developers, property owners and the public on design review applications.

  • Staffs the City's design review board, currently comprised as the Contextual Design Advisory Panel, by scheduling projects, preparing agendas, drafting letters, organizing materials, acting as recording secretary and presenting reports at public hearings and meetings.

  • Manages the staff design review process as it relates to review for architecture and urban design.

  • Reports to Boards and Commissions on the outcome of the design review process for specific projects.

  • Prepares correspondence and reports involving a significant degree of narrative and technical information; prepares and conducts presentations on the same for Planning Director, City Planning staff, Boards and Commissions, etc.

  • Communicates effectively with Planning Department personnel, City departments, City officials, other governmental and agency officials and members of the community to accomplish work objectives.

  • Makes public presentations to City Council, the City Planning Commission, other entities and the general public.

  • Facilitates, manages, and expedites community input into development proposals.

  • Maintains records, either manually or through automated systems, and prepares accurate reports, correspondence, etc. as requested or required.

  • May assist in training planners, interns, and clerical staff when appropriate.

  • May assist in the development of special programs and projects as requested or required.

  • May oversee the design, editing and/or writing for division publications, reports, flyers, etc.

  • Conducts research to gather information necessary to include in grant proposals; writes grant proposals as requested or required in order to secure project funding.

  • May work evenings and weekends as requested or required.

  • Represents the Department of City Planning at meetings, conferences, etc. as requested or required.

  • Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel as assigned or required.

  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
