BASIC PURPOSE

Under immediate or general supervision, individual will perform work on one of three teams in the Parks Maintenance Department; Parks, Right-of-ways or Mow Crew. It is intended that temporary employees are assigned to one of the three teams for the duration of their seasonal employment. The location and nature of the work will vary depending on assignment.

The Parks maintenance team is primarily responsible for grounds maintenance and custodial duties at Lacey’s parks. Duties include cleaning restrooms, emptying trash cans, collecting litter, blowing grounds and walkways, daily safety inspections, vandalism repair and other grounds maintenance activities.

The Right-of-Way maintenance team is responsible for landscape maintenance of City owned medians, round-a-bouts and right of way landscapes. Duties include mowing, edging, integrated pest management, pruning, litter removal and other landscape maintenance activities.

The Mow Crew is responsible for turf maintenance in Lacey’s parks. Duties include mowing with commercial mowers, edging, fertilizing, over seeding, grade maintenance and other grounds maintenance activities.

The schedule for this position includes weekends. The schedule will be 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Thursday to Monday.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs all types of grounds and landscape maintenance such as mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, spreading chip, blowing hard surfaces, etc.

  • Uses various types of hand tools and small gas-powered equipment such as blowers, pressure washers, edger's, hedge trimmers, line trimmers, etc.

  • Assists with restroom cleaning, emptying trash cans and picking up litter.

  • Responsible for public and personal safety while working in the field through the safe use and maintenance of power equipment.

  • Provides customer service for Lacey park visitors

QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Parks, facilities, landscape maintenance, or custodial experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES(S):

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.

  • Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Must have a valid Washington State driver license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier.

  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions.

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to work rules and guidelines.

  • Demonstrated basic mechanical aptitude.

  • Demonstrated punctuality.

  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to use personal protective equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment:

  • Typical assignments are outdoors, normally requiring work in inclement weather at cold, hot, dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped work sites.

  • The work involves physical labor, physical dexterity, and mechanical aptitude.

  • Duties may require exposure to chemicals, toxic gases, raw sewage, or other environmental hazards.

Physical Abilities:

  • Hearing, speaking, or otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone.

  • Perform physical labor associated with the essential duties of the position.

  • Work in the field in all weather conditions and over rough terrain.

  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to fifty (50) lbs. Some assistance is available to mitigate the heaviest lifting.

  • Bending, kneeling/crouching, reaching, climbing and crawling.

  • Operating equipment; electric, gas, and various hand tools.

  • Grasp and hold and effectively use assigned personal protective equipment and tools for the position.

Note: This recruitment may be used to fill other positions of the same job classification. Once all the position(s) from the recruitment announcement are filled, the recruitment may only be used to fill additional open positions for the next six (6) months.

Temporary/seasonal positions are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance. The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).

Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.

Temporary/seasonal positions are eligible for membership and will participate in the Department of Retirement Systems.

*Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
