Job Description Summary

The Lead Engineer, Usability works in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of UX Designers, UX Researchers, Engineers, clinical applications, customers and users, product management, marketing, and field teams to optimize user and system interaction and help define and develop new product technologies to meet user needs. This usability engineer position has a strong focus on human factors engineering to drive significant design improvements in product architecture and will be responsible for human factors-based research, analysis, and testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for understanding the interactions between humans and other elements of a system. Applies theory, principles, data, and methods within the engineering design process to assure proper interaction between products, systems, and processes and the people who use them. Human factors Engineering is also concerned with the "fit" between the user, equipment, and their environments; taking into account the user's capabilities and limitations, seeking to ensure that tasks, functions, information and the environment suit each user.

  • Define ‘design for usability’ acceptance criteria that will meet customer expectations. Drive usability evaluation of new features.

  • Work closely with customers, marketing, clinical applications and field personnel to understand key usability needs and develop metrics to quantify usability design.

  • Provide domain expertise to participate in technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigations with focus on evaluation of design of user workflows, interactions, and experiences based on user-centered design principles and customer needs.

  • Work with design teams to lead formative usability studies including developing study plans, scripts and reports during new product development.

  • Ensure product safety and quality by conducting summative usability studies.

  • Work with new product development core teams to lead usability design and own usability-related program deliverables (Use analysis report, UFMEA, Known Use Problems analysis, etc).

  • Engage with internal and external usability experts & capture cross-industry best practices.

Qualifications:

  • This role requires advanced experience in the Engineering/Technology & Human Factors Engineering. Knowledge level is comparable to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college ( or a high school diploma with relevant experience).

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 3 years of experience in Human Factors engineering or related experience

  • Strong understanding of usability and user-centered design

  • Proven ability to develop timely and effective solutions for challenging design problems

  • Effective communication skills - ability to present ideas clearly and concisely

  • Demonstrated ability to pursue tasks to completion

Desired Skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems. Ability to document, plan, market, and execute projects. Established project management skills.

  • 5 or more years of experience in usability/human factors engineer and/or user interface design, or related experience

  • Experience in applying usability/human factors engineering and/or user interface design for medical devices

  • Proficient in the use of software tools for analysis, mock up and design

  • Experience with research collaborations

  • Self-starter, energizing, results oriented, and able to multi-task

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, matrixed, and customer focused environment

  • Excellent communication, influencing skills and ability to gain buy-in for initiatives

  • Knowledge of product and software development lifecycle, systems thinking, Design Controls, and risk management
