MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEither:a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation orregistration by NY State with a Master’s Degree in one of the natural orforensic sciences, including or supplemented by sixteen (16) credithours in chemistry, and three (3) years of professional experience* inforensic firearms examination; or,b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation orregistration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the naturalor forensic sciences, including or supplemented by sixteen (16) credithours in chemistry, and four (4) years of professional experience* inforensic firearms examination; or,c) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation orregistration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree, and five (5) years ofprofessional* experience in forensic firearms examination.Background check will be requiredNOTE: *Professional experience is defined as experience involvingindependent responsibility for the analysis of evidence or specimens,and includes the signing and issuing of reports. Qualifying experiencemust have been gained within the last ten (10) years.Under general supervision, an employee in this position performs complextechnical work in the identification and analysis of various types offirearms, ammunition, tools and tool marks to determine such facts asthe type and operability of weapons, projectile velocity and the originof tool marks. Work differs from that of a FS I (Firearms) in that theanalyses performed are more complex than those performed by a FS I(Firearms). The work involves the use and routine maintenance ofsophisticated modern laboratory equipment. The incumbent may oversee andreview the work of subordinate laboratory personnel, ensure thereliability of test results, and develop and evaluate methods used inthe section. May participate in crime scene investigations and issuereports of analyses performed. The work includes giving testimony at avariety of legal proceedings, and requires the exercise of independentjudgment and initiative. Supervision is received from an administrativesupervisor through conferences and a review of reports issued.
