The University of Chicago\'s Department of Surgery invites applications for the position of Chief, Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery. We seek an experienced leader to support and grow the Section\'s clinical, research, and educational eminence. Appointees will demonstrate accomplishments in program building with clinical expertise in surgical approaches to inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn\'s disease), colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, pelvic floor disorders, and anorectal disorders. We especially welcome applicants with leadership experience and interest in academic administration and who are highly skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as advanced laparoscopic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), robotic surgery, and endoscopic procedures. Academic rank (Associate Professor or Professor), and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.

The Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery is nationally recognized for our surgeons\' expertise in complicated benign and malignant disorders of the colon, rectum, and anus. It is a central component of the Digestive Diseases Service Line, one of the key strategic priorities for the UChicago Medicine health system for which the Section Chief is expected to play an important leadership role. The Section currently consists of 5 full-time faculty members as well as a dedicated group of skilled support staff including physician assistants, medical assistants, nurses, and nurse practitioners, as well as highly experienced enterostomal and wound care nurses to ensure a seamless pre-, peri-, and post-operative experience for every patient. The Chief will provide visionary leadership, support, and mentoring of faculty and will be responsible for creating a diverse and inclusive environment in which all team members can thrive and achieve their fullest potential.

The Chief will be responsible for the research, education, and clinical service missions of the section and will have the vision to lead and grow the scholarly program programs in basic, translational, and/or health services research related to colorectal diseases. The Colon and Rectal Section Chief will play a leadership role in fostering collaborations among basic and clinical investigators in our well-established microbiome research program within the University of Chicago Digestive Diseases Research Core Center. Since its founding in 1990, the Digestive Disease Research Core Center at the University of Chicago has stood at the forefront of medical research. Today, we have a research base of over 50 members. Duties also include oversight of a highly-competitive ACGME-accredited colorectal fellowship as well as teaching and supervision of general surgery residents and University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine students.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, 3) be board certified or board eligible in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery, 4) have completed an accredited fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery (or equivalent training).
