The NGS laboratory is a new initiative of the Clinical Pathology Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to provide oncology laboratory diagnostic services using cutting edge technology.

The Genomic Lab Scientist II will be assisting the NGS team to establish testing, data analysis and reporting protocols that ensures adherence to regulatory standards.

This selected candidate will be responsible for performing various molecular tasks including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, library preparation, sequencing workflow executions and analysis. The ideal candidate will demonstrate good communication, team-working spirit and strong scientific thinking approach in problem solving.

This position is eligible for a sign on bonus up to $7,000 and is paid in two payouts.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine tasks competently, independently and generate reliable and consistent results.

  • Maintaining laboratory equipment, and optimizing laboratory operations for efficient use of time.

  • Perform various molecular tasks including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, library preparation, sequencing workflow executions and analysis according to established laboratory procedures.

  • Perform and document start-up, quality control, calibration, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and laboratory equipment per established laboratory protocols.

  • Manage inventory control and maintain adequate supplies for daily operation and testing.

  • Participate in the design, planning, and execution of NGS-based assays. Participate in new technology improvement and quality assurance projects.

  • Validate and implement new testing protocols and/or techniques.

  • Responsible in quality control, data analysis, and troubleshooting.

  • Maintain accurate lab records and documentation.

  • Answer basic client questions and inquiries. Asks for assistance to ensure client questions and inquires have been satisfactorily answered.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. /B.A. in laboratory science, molecular science or medical technology.

  • ASCP certified in Molecular Biology. Successful completion of a clinical laboratory medicine rotation, clinical practicum, or equivalent clinical laboratory experience.

  • Ability to work in teams and good communication skills

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Preferred with at least 1 year molecular lab experience including DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation and NGS analysis.

Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.

Work is varied every day and the employee needs to be adaptable to respond to these changes and use independent judgment and manage priorities.
