GIS Analyst – Geographic Solutions & Services (GSS)

Reports to: GIS Support Supervisor

Location: This is an in-office position reporting to 755 Jefferson Street, Atlanta, Georgia. This is not a remote position.

Job Summary

Georgia Power’s Distribution GIS application (DistGIS) supplies data to a host of critical applications. This position will join a team of eight GIS Analysts who work as technical support contacts and subject-matter-experts for DistGIS and related software. This position is responsible for resolving GIS issues and ensuring that our integrated enterprise systems are performing optimally. This role provides spatial data analytics and reporting to various business leaders, in addition to coordinating strategic efforts to incorporate new technologies and solutions across the GIS enterprise. The successful candidate must have demonstrated the ability to perform at a high level with minimum supervision. Some emergency after-hours and weekend work will be required.

Job Responsibilities & Expectations

  • Provide technical support and assistance to our statewide DistGIS user community

  • Champion our Southern Company Leading-as-a-System (LaaS) initiative to standardized and transition to Esri’s Utility Network Management solution

  • Support the GIS interfaces to our Outage Management System (NMS), Map Viewers (DistView, GISWeb & ArcFM Mobile), ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, Planning Tool (CYME), and Enterprise Asset Management (MAXIMO)

  • Collaborate with the Southern Company Technology Organization (TO), GIS software vendors, and peer utilities to define functional requirements and advocate for solutions based on end-user input

  • Direct and manage application testing, performance benchmarking, and deployment efforts for software upgrades

  • Implement business unit workflows, mapping standards, application configurations, schema changes, and geodatabase data model enhancements

  • Perform data analytics and reporting functions to support Property Accounting, Marketing, Metering, Reliability, Distribution Operations, and others

  • Prepare maps, shapefiles, and geodatabases to support Asset Management, Forestry, Lighting Services, Asset Protection, and other business units

  • Safeguard the integrity of our enterprise geodatabase, distribution facility data, asset records, and network data model

  • Administer the publication of DistGIS data via server and cloud-centric solutions

  • Develop geoprocessing models and scripts to automate reoccurring tasks

  • Advise on the creation of training manuals and help documentation

Job Requirements

Education

  • BS in Computer Science, MIS, GIS, or Engineering related field is preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years working with Esri’s ArcGIS 10.x desktop products

  • Prior experience with Esri’s ArcGIS Pro application

  • Proven record of dealing effectively with internal and external customers

  • Capable of analyzing spatial data and compiling detailed reports

  • Proficiency with Python (ArcPy) scripting and geoprocessing is highly desirable

  • Experience authoring SQL queries is preferred

  • Experience creating PowerBI dashboards is preferred

  • Experience authoring map and feature services for use in ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal) web mapping applications is a plus

  • History of providing technical support for an enterprise, versioned ArcSDE geodatabase within a Citrix environment is beneficial

  • Understanding of electric utility engineering and construction work practices is valuable

  • Knowledge of Safe Software FME or ETL tools is preferred

  • Understanding of relational database architecture and SQL is desirable

  • Familiarity with publishing and authoring content within ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal) and ArcGIS Online is a plus
